First Battle of Kernstown Tour Draws Large Turnout

Yesterday, the Kernstown Battlefield Association (KBA) hosted an all-day First Battle of Kernstown walking and driving tour. A total of 45 engaged registrants participated in this informative tour led by Gary Ecelbarger, the renowned author of “We Are In For It! The First Battle of Kernstown, March 23, 1862.”

The morning portion of the March 21st event consisted of a walking tour of the Kernstown Battlefield “main campus” property covering early battle action as viewed from the Union artillery positions on Pritchard’s Hill and from the Confederate infantry route of march across our southern fields. After a lunch break, the tour group reassembled at Rose Hill Park for continued discussions of the later stages of the battle. The tour concluded with a visit to the KBA’s Sandy Ridge property where the final and decisive Union infantry assaults took place. Many thanks to Gary Ecelbarger for sharing his time and knowledge with the group, and to all of the participants who came out on a beautiful day!

Several additional events are planned at the Kernstown Battlefield throughout 2026. Check out our full calendar at: Events — Kernstown Battlefield.
