Clearing of Sandy Ridge Continues

Yesterday and today have been beautiful days to have local company Timber Works go to work on Sandy Ridge, part of the Kernstown Battlefield property, to help clear where Stonewall Jackson placed three batteries of artillery during the 1st Battle of Kernstown and other key fighting occurred. The Kernstown Battlefield Association (KBA) hires Timber Works annually to mulch the undergrowth on Sandy Ridge to help make the ridge more like it was during the Civil War.

This ridge saw action during three battles: The 1st and 2nd Battles of Kernstown and the 2nd Battle of Winchester. For those familiar with the area, there will soon be trails connecting this ridge with the publicly accessible Rose Hill Park, where the majority of the infantry fighting took place during the 1st Battle of Kernstown. On Sandy Ridge itself, work is continuing through tomorrow to clear a Civil War era road trace, the area where Union Col. William Murray was killed during the 1st Battle of Kernstown, the viewpoint to the main Kernstown Battlefield and the areas where the two trails from Rose Hill will connect to our property.

Don't forget to mark March 21st on your calendar. This is the date when author Gary Ecelbarger will be giving a tour of the 1st Battle of Kernstown. The tour will include a visit to Sandy Ridge.
