New Trail Connecting Rose Hill Park to Sandy Ridge Nearly Complete
Yesterday, volunteers from the Kernstown Battlefield Association (KBA) worked to complete the connector trail from the existing Rose Hill Park loop trail to Sandy Ridge, a property owned by the KBA. Much of the infantry engagement took place here during the 1st Battle of Kernstown.
Thanks to KBA volunteers Dan Heim, Chuck Maurer, Steve Cantu, David Wingenbach, Charlie Hagan and Steve Chesley, the connector trail is nearly ready for use. Once completed, which will be very soon, visitors will be able to walk from the publicly accessible Rose Hill Park trail to Sandy Ridge, which was the location where parts of three Civil War battles were fought. There are five historical markers and a Confederate mass gravesite from the 1st Battle of Kernstown located on Sandy Ridge. Please keep your eyes and ears open for a planned grand opening tour of the trail led by representatives of the KBA and the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation. If you are not a member of both of these great preservation organizations, please visit their respective websites and help support their efforts on preservation and historical education.
