New Trails Will Connect Rose Hill Park to Sandy Ridge

The Kernstown Battlefield Association (KBA) is pleased to announce that Frederick County Parks & Recreation will soon be building two trails off of the existing Rose Hill Park loop trail that will connect to Sandy Ridge, a property owned by the KBA. Much of the infantry engagement took place here during the 1st Battle of Kernstown.

The trails will cut through property recently purchased by the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation and will take visitors to Sandy Ridge. Visitors will be able to hike the trails and once on Sandy Ridge they will be able to see a Confederate mass grave site and see where Stonewall Jackson placed three batteries of artillery. Sandy Ridge is the location where parts of three battles were fought; 1st and 2nd Kernstown and the 2nd Battle of Winchester. There are currently five historical markers on Sandy Ridge that describe the fighting that took place there. The trails should be accessible from the Rose Hill Park loop trail sometime this spring.
