What You Will Experience
Come, learn about your Civil War heritage – not only its military history but also the stories of the families who experienced the challenges and rewards of cultivating this land. Feel their presence. Feel their spirit. Our visitor center offers informational panels and interesting military artifacts, a gift shop/bookstore, a three-dimensional electronic map of the Kernstown area, and a kids’ corner with period clothing for photo opportunities.
Join our friendly docent staff on a golf cart battlefield tour! Stand atop Pritchard’s Hill and take in the views of the beautiful Lower Shenandoah Valley. Learn about the First Battle of Kernstown, where General “Stonewall” Jackson looms large, even in defeat. Also learn about the Second Battle of Kernstown, where a poorly-led Union army was routed by veteran Confederate forces in what would be their last major victory in the Valley.
Take a guided tour of the 1854 home where Samuel Pritchard, his wife and young children endured both battles and the Union Army occupation of their farm. In the house, visit the field hospital exhibit to learn about Civil War medical care and period herbal remedies.
Visit our Artillery Building to see our collection of Civil War artillery and ammunition, as well as an impressive 36-foot-wide multi-dimensional mural depicting the final stages of the Second Battle of Kernstown fought on the front lawn of the Pritchard House.
Historical Interpretation Trails
While you are here, you may choose to walk all or part of our 3.6 miles of color-coded historical interpretation trails and learn more about the battles fought here, as well as the history of the families that lived on the property and the nearly 300 years of agriculture on this site. Or just enjoy the outdoors at our beautiful site by taking a run on our cross-country course trails or enjoying our picnic area.
Tours
The Kernstown Battlefield Association has hosted many Civil War round tables, historical bus tours, school groups, clubs and informal groups from throughout the United States. Contact us in advance to make special arrangements for your group tour. While we do not charge for these arrangements, we would greatly appreciate receiving a donation from your group to help us preserve and maintain this historically significant site.
